OSSC Junior Grade Typist — Official Rules
The Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) conducts a typing skill test as Stage III for Junior Grade Typist and Junior Stenographer posts. The test carries 50 marks total (25 per language).
| Language | Duration | Min Words | Min Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 10 minutes | 370 words | 37 WPM |
| Odia (InScript) | 25 minutes | 400 words | 16 WPM |
Scoring Formula (OSSC Official)
Score = (25 ÷ Total Words in Passage) × Correct Words Typed
Example: If passage has 50 words and you type 45 correctly → (25 ÷ 50) × 45 = 22.5 out of 25
- Minimum qualifying: 10 out of 25 marks per language
- Marks are only evaluated if you type minimum required words (370 English / 400 Odia)
- If you type below minimum words → 0 marks regardless of accuracy
- Error method: word-by-word — a word is either fully correct or fully wrong
- No partial credit for a partially correct word
- No negative marking
- Typing test marks are added to final merit list
OSSSC Junior Assistant — Official Rules
The Odisha Sub-ordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC) conducts a practical skill test for Junior Assistant and Junior Clerk posts. The test is qualifying only — not scored for merit.
| Language | Minimum Speed | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Odia (InScript) | 20 WPM | Mandatory qualifying |
| English | 40 WPM | Mandatory qualifying |
- Both Odia and English tests are compulsory
- Failure in either language = disqualification from the entire recruitment
- Test is qualifying only — pass/fail, not merit-based
- Keyboard: Odia InScript layout only
How Errors Are Counted
All Odisha government exams use the word-by-word error method. A "word" is any sequence of characters separated by spaces.
Counted as Errors ❌
- Wrong character anywhere in the word
- Extra character inserted
- Missing character
- Wrong matra (vowel sign) in Odia
- Wrong consonant in Odia
- Missing halant (virama) in Odia
- Extra or missing space between words
- Wrong word order (transposition)
- Wrong case (English only)
Not Counted as Errors ✅
- Correcting mistakes using backspace before space
- Final typed word is correct — no matter how many backspaces used
- Typing speed variation
WPM Calculation
Gross WPM = Total Words Typed ÷ Time in Minutes
Net WPM = Correct Words ÷ Time in Minutes
Odisha govt exams use correct words as the basis — equivalent to Net WPM. Both Gross and Net WPM are displayed on exam results.
Exam Interface — What to Expect on Exam Day
- Passage displayed at top of screen
- Typing area located below the passage
- NO word highlighting — no green for correct, no red for errors
- NO error indicators while typing
- NO automatic scrolling
- Backspace key is fully enabled at all times
- Auto-submit when timer reaches zero — no grace period
InScript Keyboard Requirement
Odia InScript is the only keyboard layout accepted in Odisha government typing tests (OSSC, OSSSC). Phonetic and transliteration keyboards are NOT permitted.
If you practice with a phonetic keyboard, your practice will not prepare you for the real exam. Download the official Odia InScript keyboard:

Can I use backspace in the exam?
Yes. Backspace is fully enabled in OSSC and OSSSC exams. You can correct mistakes at any time.
Are errors highlighted in red during the exam?
No. There is no error highlighting in any Odisha government typing exam. Your typed text appears exactly as you type it — no colors, no underlines.
What keyboard layout is used for Odia typing?
The Odia InScript keyboard layout (BIS standard, Govt of India approved). You can download it from tools.ova.gov.in.
What happens if I type fewer than 370 words in English?
In OSSC exams, your marks are evaluated as zero regardless of accuracy. You must type at least the minimum required words.
Is the typing test qualifying or merit-based for OSSSC?
Qualifying only for OSSSC Junior Assistant. Pass/fail — your typing speed does not affect the merit list ranking.
Is the typing test merit-based for OSSC?
Yes. OSSC typing test marks (out of 25 per language) are added to the final merit list. Higher marks improve your rank.
How many marks do I need to qualify in OSSC?
Minimum 10 out of 25 marks per language. But qualifying minimum is not enough to rank well — aim for 20+.
Can I use a phonetic keyboard for practice?
You should not. All exams use InScript exclusively. Phonetic keyboard practice will not translate to exam performance. Use our InScript typing tutor instead.
